Neck Pain Q & A

What is neck facet syndrome?

Neck facet syndrome is a joint problem that causes neck pain. This condition develops when your neck facet joints — the joints that connect the vertebrae in your cervical spine — sustain damage.

Usually, the damage comes from trauma or from excessive movement. The facet joints help you move freely, so when there's a problem with these joints, you may have not only pain but also restricted range-of-motion.

What is whiplash?

Whiplash is an injury that develops after neck hyperextension. It often develops after auto accidents due to the violent back-and-forth motion your body makes when the vehicles collide.

Whiplash can cause severe neck pain, restricted range-of-motion, headaches, and other serious issues. This condition doesn't have an immediate onset, so you may feel fine after an accident only to awaken a day later with terrible neck pain.

What kind of disc problems cause neck pain?

Your cervical discs, the discs in your neck, can cause severe pain and inhibited movement when they're damaged. There are several cervical disc issues, including disc degeneration and disc herniation.

Disc degeneration causes a gradual reduction in disc size, leaving less padding between your joints. In disc herniation, the gel-like disc material leaks out due to a weakened disc wall.

How can chiropractic care help with neck pain?

Chiropractic care at Lefranc Chiropractic can help with your neck pain in several different ways. First, your chiropractic caregiver performs a complete exam of your neck and spine.

Usually, X-rays are next because they can help your chiropractor verify the source of your neck pain. Once your chiropractor knows where your pain originated, they can make a treatment plan to remedy the issue at its source.

Your chiropractic care plan for neck pain typically starts with spinal manipulation to correct imbalances causing your pain. If manual adjustments aren't sufficient, spinal traction can gently separate your cervical discs and then return them to the proper placement.

Other therapies that are often very helpful in noninvasive neck pain relief include:

  • Electrical stimulation
  • Cryotherapy
  • Hot packs
  • Ultrasound therapy

Your chiropractic care plan will likely include at least several of these treatments, as they complement chiropractic care very efficiently.
